Vaginal dryness

Although it’s not something that is often spoken about, around 50% of women will experience vaginal dryness, itching or pain during sex after the menopause.

Whilst many symptoms of the menopause, such as hot flushes or mood swings, reduce and eventually disappear, vaginal dryness may not.

It is caused by a decrease in oestrogen levels after the menopause. Vaginal dryness is often progressive which means that it may get worse over time. The impact of the symptoms can vary hugely from woman to woman – from minor irritation to greater discomfort.

experience vaginal atrophy after the menopause

Some women experience vaginal irritation with itching, soreness and pain during sex, which may start at anytime from just before the menopause to sometime after it.

The medical term for this is vaginal atrophy (VA), a chronic and progressive condition, and symptoms may increase and get worse rather than better over time.
